KIM’S BEAUTY SALON (KSM) in London, England has been offering its clients a choice of styles since its founding in 2011.
The salon is located in a former shop space on the edge of the city, and the staff are all women of colour, with a mixture of African, Asian and Latin American descent.
They work with a variety of clients, including the UK’s first Black Muslim women’s hair salon.
They also cater for clients who are not able to go to a salon for their hair style, and are a popular choice for students and people with small budgets.
The owner and proprietor, Samir Al-Ghazi, told me that while his salon has been around for over a decade, they are only the latest in a long line of stylists to set up shop in the UK.
“We started our business about four years ago and we had no experience in the area,” he said.
“In a way, we feel like the future of hair and beauty is here in London and the UK, and we wanted to try and cater to that niche of people who don’t have a lot of money, or who don´t have access to the same options.”
We have to say that we have a few hundred people in the shop, but we have no way of really advertising to them.
We just say ‘here are your options’.
“There are no advertising, no branding and we have to make sure we give them something to do, and not just to buy something.”
The salon has also become a favourite stop for many Asian tourists visiting London, particularly in the past year, when the number of people arriving in the city for the first time rose by 50%.
However, there are plenty of Asian-American and black people working in the salon, and Al-GHazi told me they are working to make it better.
“There is still a lot to be done to get the hair done right, to make the hair flow in the right direction,” he added.
“But the people who work here, they want to give you a great service, and I feel they are doing that.”
I decided to take the time to see what was available, and what makes a salon different to other beauty salons.
Here is what I found.

They started out as a barber shop before moving on to open their own salon.
“My father started out doing barbers in Detroit and he was very successful,” Al-ghazi said.
After that, his business grew and eventually he opened his own salon, which he still runs.
“It was the start of my business,” he explained.
“At that time, barbers were not really doing a lot, so I wanted to create a salon that I would be able to do a job that I loved.”
It was at this time that he realised that he had a problem: his clients were predominantly Caucasian.
“They asked me if I could make them feel more comfortable,” he admitted.
“So I thought, I will make them more comfortable and I will do the work.
And then, they would ask me how I make my hair look and how I can make them look beautiful.
Al-ghaazi explained that he learnt to make his own hair at a young age, which made the process much easier. “
I had to learn to do the hair and make the haircuts in a way that is comfortable and safe and professional and respectful to the clients and the salon.”

“Once I got my hair done, it was much easier for me to make my own hair because I had the tools to make a lot more of them.
It took me about eight hours to make all the hair, but I also had the time and experience to work on my hair in the mornings,” he told me.
“If I have a headache, I just go home and have a glass of wine.
I do a lot.
I know what I want.”
How does the hair work?
The salon employs two hair stylists, who are part of a team of three who are responsible for the hairstyles that are chosen for each client.
The stylists are called the stylists of the salon and they are part-time employees.
The staff at the salon work in a variety that ranges from black hair to dark hair, straight hair and straight styles.
“The stylists all have a little bit of time off, and when they have a day off, they work for me,” Alghazi explained
