Posted August 15, 2019 09:04:52A year after the Harvey Harvey Weinstein allegations, many of the salon’s staff members are calling on the business to be allowed to reopen and to be compensated for the pain they suffered.
Key points:Janet Beauty salon employees said they were “horrified” by Weinstein allegations”The salon was a hub for the sexual harassment scandal which began in 2016Janet’s director of social and development, Anne Marie Bissonnette, resigned as a director of the company, in what some say was retaliation for what they said was poor leadershipThe salon’s owner, Barbara Weldon, is also under investigation by the Australian Federal Police.
Ms Bissonette, who also owns the company’s beauty salon, was forced to resign in December after a New York Times article detailed allegations against Weinstein that included unwanted advances.”
We have been told that our staff were harassed,” she said in a statement.”
To make matters worse, they are being retaliated against for speaking out against Mr Weinstein.
“I want to be clear, I am appalled by what happened in the past year.
I am also shocked by the reaction to this incident, and the way it has been portrayed in the media.”
My heart goes out to the people who have been affected by these allegations.
“She also defended her former director, Ms Weldon.”
It was never my intention to discriminate against anyone in our business, nor did I have any intention of retaliating against anyone,” Ms Bissonade said.”
As a result, I was shocked when a member of staff made a false allegation that I had tried to stop the harassment.
“She said she had no comment to make about whether she had been asked to resign, but she did not dispute that Ms Wellons performance had been poor in the years since.”
This is the first time I have ever felt the need to make any comment to that effect, but I have no choice,” she told ABC News.
The allegations against Ms Welda had been widely reported, but only recently had they been made public.
In an interview with ABC News Breakfast on Monday, Ms Bisonnette said the allegations were “unfounded”.”
I do believe there were inappropriate behaviours at the salon in the last year and it’s unfortunate,” she added.”
But I don’t know that I was the person that was trying to stop it, and I do not know that there was any retaliation or anything like that.
“Janet said it was “a nightmare” to have to deal with allegations of harassment and the “bitter truth” that it had been reported.”
That was the truth that we were living with and I was trying not to put that on to anybody else, but it was a terrible, terrible thing,” she explained.”
You’re not a good person for doing that to your staff.
It was a bitter truth that I know was out there.
“Janette said that the backlash from the scandal had left her feeling “a little bit alone”.”
People have been calling me a liar and saying I’m lying,” she lamented.”
When I tell people I am not a liar, they say that’s not who I am.”‘
I think about my own family’The salon reopened in 2017 but Ms Bisons sister-in-law, Barbara Bisson, was fired from her role as a manager in January after allegations of misconduct.
Ms Weldon said the incident at the time was not her fault, and was simply a consequence of the fallout of the harassment allegations.”
People who know me know I’m not the type of person who would try to take that on,” she admitted.”
What happened in 2016 was a direct result of that.
“She described the allegations against her as “very hurtful” and said that they “felt like an attack” on her family.”
They were very hurtful and a lot of them were really hurtful,” she conceded.”
So, you know, it’s hard to live with that, especially when it’s been so long and so hurtful.
“Ms Bisonette said she was “extremely proud” of her family, and that she would continue to fight for justice for the victims.”
One of the things I’m going to be doing is trying to help people in the industry who are victims of abuse or discrimination,” she suggested.”
There are still a lot more people to come out who have had their careers damaged and their livelihoods ruined.
